How to Choose the Right Lighting for Your Home

Of all of the decisions and selections new homeowners need to make, especially when building a new home, light fixtures are one of the more important features to consider. If you want to have great lighting throughout your home, there are several factors you should take into account before you start choosing your fixtures:

Size of the space.

When choosing ceiling fixtures, you’ll want to make sure they are large enough to fill the room with the right amount of light. One easy way to do this is to measure the length and width of the room and add those two numbers together. That total, in feet, is about the size the light fixture should be in inches. For example. If you have a room that is 15 feet by 20 feet, you will be looking for a light fixture that is about 25 inches in diameter.
Of course, another factor to consider is the visual weight of the fixture. If it is darker and bolder, you may want to size down so that it doesn’t look too big for the space. If it is light and airy, you may be able to size up.

Include different types and levels of lighting.

Overhead lights are a great starting point, but don’t stop there. Table and floor lamps help add light to dark areas of the room and serve a purpose, like providing light for reading or playing games. Including dimmers can help create different moods in the room as well.

Never underestimate the power of ample natural light!

Natural light cuts the cost of electricity, and is a healthy way to enjoy the indoors. Studies have shown that natural light reduces your blood pressure, and increases your focus. It also helps with stress and anxiety, and can boost your immune system. Need more? Windows also increase your home’s value. Several of our floorplans have optional windows that you can add in to increase the natural light.

Purpose of the room.

Many rooms serve multiple purposes. Your eat-in kitchen may also serve as the place where the kids gather to do homework and where you end your day with a glass of wine. Having dimmers and multiple sources of lighting helps you to accomplish different tasks in the space.

Decide if the light fixture will be the focal point.

In some rooms, the light fixture may serve as the star of the room. In these spaces, you may not need multiple types of lighting, especially if the room does not serve several purposes. Areas such as the foyer and dining room are examples of rooms where there may be a more dramatic, attention-grabbing light fixture.

Choose lighting that matches your design aesthetic.

At the end of the day, your home should reflect your taste. For some, a larger and bolder light fixture is the way to go. For others, less is more. If the lighting helps you to function in the space, and you like the way it looks, that is all that matters!

The lighting throughout your home is a factor that should not be overlooked, and you should take your time in choosing your light fixtures. However, don’t overthink it. The only way you can mess it up is if the lighting does not help you to function in the space and if you don’t like the way it looks.
