Maximizing Your Outdoor Living Space

If there is one thing the pandemic has taught us, it’s to learn to appreciate staying at home. Homeowners everywhere have been creating new ways to use their living spaces – such as setting up home gyms and offices – so that they can continue their daily activities at home while the rest of the world is shut down.

With warmer months upon us, many are now looking for ways to max out the potential of their outdoor living spaces. Whether you have acres of land at your disposal or just a small porch or patio, there are several ways you can make your outdoor areas functional and enjoyable for everyone.

Seating and Furniture

In terms of seating, you’ll want to get furniture that can be placed around the perimeter. A modular sectional is a great solution, since you’ll be able to move the pieces around if you decide to rearrange the space. If your area isn’t large enough to accommodate a large sectional, a few chairs and accent tables will serve the same purpose.

Try to incorporate furniture that can serve multiple purposes, such as storage benches or accent tables that can also serve as foot stools. By using versatile pieces that you can move around, you will be better prepared for any type of social gathering.

Consider Foot Traffic

When setting up your space, think of how people will likely walk in and out of the area. Leave a wide pathway to make it easier to get in and out, and to make the space appear more spacious.

Lighting

If you want your family or guests to enjoy your outdoor areas no matter what time of day, outdoor light is a must. Installing overhead lights, hanging string lights, or placing lanterns around are all great ways to add lighting.

Keep it Comfortable

Do you live somewhere that gets plenty of sun? Try to get some kind of cover to provide shade for your guests. Whether you use the shade from the trees, an umbrella, or you build a gazebo, your family and friends will enjoy the outdoors much more if they aren’t overheated. If you live in a place with cooler evenings, perhaps install a fire pit or have a fire bowl on hand to keep everyone warm. The option to have a fire outdoors allows you to use your outdoor areas even during the cold months.

Be Creative

Think of how your family or typical guests will want to spend time outside, For some, this may mean having activities such as bubbles or sports equipment readily available for kids. Others may need to have yard games such as cornhole readily available. Some people may benefit from having a bar and a tv outdoors.

These are all just a few factors to think about when planning for your outdoor living spaces. There is no one best way to set up these areas; after all, they are YOUR spaces and should be set up in a way that will allow you to enjoy your home. Have fun with it!
