7 Ways to Use Your Bonus Room

When building new homes, more and more families are incorporating bonus rooms or spaces into their design plans. Even if these spaces aren’t specifically in the floor plan, for some people a bonus room may be a spare bedroom, a finished basement, or a room in the house that they want to repurpose, such as a formal dining room.

Your home should be a reflection of how you live your life. What are your hobbies? How do you enjoy spending your time?

Here are some ideas for fun and functional ways to use the bonus rooms in your house:

1. Home Office

This one may seem obvious, but with more employers offering telework and students completing their education virtually, having a dedicated space for work would be beneficial for many families.

2. Home Gym

Whether you’re already an avid gym-goer or someone that wants to exercise more, having a place in your home where you can work out without distractions can help you stay on task. Plus, the convenience of working out without having to leave your home can help make it a more regular habit.

3. Library

If you enjoy reading, or if you like to read with your kids, consider using your bonus room as a library! You’ll need nothing more than a cozy chair, some shelving, and maybe a lamp.

4. Playroom

Designating a playroom for the kids can keep the noise and mess at bay throughout the rest of your home, and give them a place to be creative and have fun.

5. Mudroom

Mudrooms have become very popular in home design. They provide a place to drop shoes, jackets, bookbags, purses, and pretty much anything you’d need when running out the door. Some families also use the mudroom for laundry, giving it a dual purpose.

6. Creative Room

Do you like to paint, sew, or scrapbook? Or are you a collector of something special? Dedicate a space to be creative and enjoy your hobby or craft.

7. Game Room

Make family game night a regular thing! You can get a pool or ping pong table or some arcade games if you have the room, or keep it simple and place some board games on a shelf next to a table.
